Amsterdam is famous for… a couple things, I think. I’ll be honest, it’s not a city on my radar. It’s famous for marijuana legalization. It’s famous for Amstel Light commercials. And it’s famous for… I’ll be real I got nothing.
All I know is, Amsterdam Falafel makes A’dam Good Falafel. (That’s the actual slogan, but I support it)
Like Ben’s for U St, Amsterdam has been part of the Adams Morgan community for years now. Founded by a couple American tourists who came back from the city and were impressed by the eatery styling they had there, they decided to start something similar in the U.S. With falafel.
Falafel is actually a middle eastern dish. Apparently Egypt has the best falafel in the world. No, it’s not camel meat, contrary to my friend Amr Bayomi, but fried balls of ground up chick peas. When served, it’s handed to you in a pita bread within some paper (They’re cutting down on their carbon footprint by using biodegradable packaging I guess).
Now, I could eat falafel by itself, it’s pretty good. But what makes the way it’s served here great is that after you get the falafel, you’re given the freedom to put on however many toppings they offer in however much you want of it. Nothing tastes better than freedom! God bless America (though the concept came from Europe)!
Now, the way I get it is with the following: A lot of red hot sauce, some crunchy onions, a good deal of torrator, and some Dill Tzatziki (hey, I think that’s how it’s spelled on the app). It makes for a sweet and spicy combination that I can’t resist. They have a boat load of more stuff, but I’m honestly chicken when it comes to things like… egg plant…
So if you’re in the Adams Morgan Area, just a short walk from the zoo or Columbia Heights, checking this place out is a must.
